Jesus didn’t rebuke Thomas for his doubt and questioning. Instead Jesus told Him to come close and see for himself. In facing his doubt Thomas was in the process of building his faith. History tells us that Thomas went on to be a missionary / pastor possibly planting churches as far away as India.
Today, many people doubt. They doubt the existence of God and His love. They live in a world without meaning or purpose. Most have never considered the teachings of the Bible or for that matter even read the Bible.
However, there are modern skeptics who have faced their doubt. They “put their fingers in the side of Christ” by examining the evidence for themselves. One such individual was the Oxford scholar, C.S. Lewis. Lewis, a devoted intellectual atheist, was challenged by his friends to examine the claims of the Christian faith. As he studied the literary and logical evidence he eventually came to faith in Jesus Christ. As his faith grew he became a leading defender of the Christian faith.
Another example is Josh McDowell. As young man, McDowell was angry at the world. Much of his anger was focused upon members of the Christian faith. He set out on a mission to collect evidence that would disprove Christianity. In the process He collected the evidence that would lead him to faith in Christ. Lewis and McDowell discovered that a “leap of faith” could be reduced to a small jump by their willingness to confront their doubt.
